Cardiff Airport coach transfers: authorisation for 40 or more
Cardiff Airport asks for coaches carrying 40 or more passengers to be authorised before they arrive. Once consent is given, the coach may stop briefly right outside the terminal, in the drop-off zone.
Authorisation first
Coach access must be approved by the airport ahead of arrival. The operator arranges it, but only if they have the flight and date in good time.
A coach without that consent goes to Long Stay instead. The first 20 minutes cost nothing; after that, the normal tariff applies. For a delayed flight, that is where the coach waits.

The Port Road approach
The drop-off and pick-up area is reached from the eastern approach, Port Road. Picking up or dropping off on the approach roads is not allowed. The drop-off zone charges by the 10-minute block, and no vehicle may be left there unattended. For a car, Car Park 2 gives 20 free minutes to drop or collect.
Where the driver meets you
- Coach access for coaches of 40 or more passengers must be authorised by the airport before arrival; with prior consent a coach may park temporarily in the drop-off zone directly outside the terminal.
Where coaches wait
- Otherwise coaches park in the Long Stay car park, free for the first 20 minutes and charged at the normal tariff after that.
Drive to the city centre
- about 12-13 miles by road to Cardiff Castle, about 25 min in light traffic; longer at peak times
From Rhoose into Cardiff
Rhoose, in the Vale of Glamorgan, is roughly 13 miles west of the city. From junction 33 of the M4 the route follows the A4232, A4050 and A4226. Cardiff Castle is about 12 to 13 miles by road, about 25 minutes when it is quiet.
Since September 2023 the default limit on restricted roads in Wales, typically lit streets in towns, has been 20 mph. Some roads are going back to 30 mph after a review. Follow the signs and expect slower urban legs than in England. Cardiff has no charging Clean Air Zone.
Principality Stadium days
On major event days the streets around the stadium, including Westgate Street, St Mary Street and Castle Street, close for most of the day. The council sets up bookable coach and minibus parking for those days, for example at the Civic Centre or on Lloyd George Avenue. The Sophia Gardens coach park takes bookings for event days only.
Crossing into England
Both Severn bridges dropped their tolls in December 2018, so a coach to Bristol or Bath pays nothing to cross. Bristol Airport also serves Cardiff if flights suit better there.
