Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Glasgow Coach Hire with a Driver

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone is the rule that shapes a coach booking here. Unlike the Clean Air Zones in England, there is no charge that lets an older vehicle in.

The zone is a ban, not a fee

The zone covers about a square mile of the city centre, with the M8 on its north and west sides, the river to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east. It runs all day, all year. A vehicle below the standard that drives in is caught on camera and sent a penalty charge notice.

Coaches need Euro VI, or Euro IV for heavy petrol. Minibuses need Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol. Get it in writing that the vehicle meets the standard. The M8 is outside the zone, so traffic passing the centre is not affected.

Concerts and events at the SEC

The Scottish Event Campus holds the OVO Hydro, the Armadillo and the SEC Centre halls. For the Hydro, the drop-off and pick-up zone is to the west of the SEC Centre. Tell the group where to walk before the show ends; thousands leave at once.

Hampden Park, Celtic Park and Ibrox fill up the same way when there is a game. Choose a collection spot a few streets from the ground and tell the driver in advance.

Coach rules in Glasgow

  • Glasgow Airport (GLA) is about 9 miles by road west of the city centre via the M8, about 15-20 min in light traffic; Glasgow Prestwick (PIK) is about 32 miles south-west, about 45 min. Greenock Ocean Terminal is about 24 miles west, about 35-45 min.
  • Glasgow's Low Emission Zone covers about one square mile of the city centre, bounded by the M8 to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east; the M8 itself is not in the zone. It operates 24 hours a day, all year round.
  • In Glasgow's LEZ buses and coaches must meet Euro VI (diesel) or Euro IV (heavy petrol); cars, minibuses and vans must meet Euro 6 (diesel) or Euro 4 (petrol). Motorcycles and mopeds are unaffected.
  • Scottish LEZs cannot be paid to enter: a non-compliant vehicle detected by the cameras is issued a penalty charge notice. Glasgow's LEZ applied to local buses from 31 December 2018 and to all vehicles from 1 June 2023.
  • At the Scottish Event Campus, the OVO Hydro drop-off and pick-up zone is at the west of the SEC Centre.

Airports and the cruise terminal

Glasgow Airport is about 9 miles west on the M8, 15 to 20 minutes. If the coach is early, the Long Stay car park gives it half an hour at no charge; the pickup itself is in Zone C of the terminal multi-storey. Prestwick is about 32 miles south-west, around 45 minutes.

Greenock's Ocean Terminal is about 25 miles west, around 40 minutes.

Lochs and glens

Balloch on Loch Lomond is about 35 minutes. Stirling Castle is about 45. Glencoe and Oban are over 2 hours each way. A day like that uses a good share of the driver's permitted driving, so confirm the return time before the programme goes out.

Questions

What happens if a non-compliant coach enters the LEZ?

Cameras record it and a penalty charge notice follows. There is no pay-to-enter option in Scotland, so book a compliant vehicle.

Where can a coach park in central Glasgow?

There is no official coach parking list to point to. Ask the operator where the driver will wait, and remember that most of the centre is inside the zone.

How long does Edinburgh take?

About 1.25 hours by road. Edinburgh runs its own Low Emission Zone to the Scottish rules, so a vehicle that is fine in Glasgow is fine there too.

Can a minibus enter the zone?

Yes, provided it is a Euro 6 diesel or a Euro 4 petrol. Older minibuses cannot enter without a penalty.
