Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Coach Hire in Sheffield, with a Driver

Sheffield has a charging Clean Air Zone inside the Inner Ring Road, and it covers coaches and minibuses. Check the vehicle against it before anything else. After that, most of the planning is about where the group meets the coach.

Check the vehicle before the route

A coach enters free if it meets Euro VI. For minibuses the bar is Euro 6 on diesel and Euro 4 on petrol. If the day starts or ends in the centre, ask for the standard to be stated on the quote.

Schools have their own way through. A coach or minibus contracted to a school for an educational trip can be given a local exemption, and so can a vehicle adapted for disabled passengers if it has at least ten seats. Both are applied for before the day, not after. If an older vehicle is the only one free, the daily charge can be paid up to six days either side of travel.

Arriving by train

The station approach is one-way, only hackney carriages can pick up right beside the building, and Cross Turner Street allows only the briefest drop-off. A coach cannot load a group there. Name a meeting spot a short walk off, and send it to everyone before they travel.

Hotels out at Meadowhall and junction 34 of the M1 are easier for a coach to reach than those in the centre, and they are close to the arena.

Coach rules in Sheffield

  • Manchester Airport is about 45 miles by road (about 1 h 15 min across the Pennines), East Midlands Airport about 45 miles (about 50 min via the M1) and Leeds Bradford about 45 miles (about 1 h).
  • Sheffield has a Class C Clean Air Zone, in force since 27 February 2023 and enforced 24 hours a day by number-plate cameras. It covers the city centre within and including the Inner Ring Road (most ring-road roundabouts are left out so drivers can turn back). Buses, coaches, minibuses, taxis, private hire vehicles, vans and HGVs are charged if they do not meet the standard; private cars and motorbikes are not charged.
  • The Clean Air Zone standard is Euro VI for buses and coaches, and Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol for minibuses. Sheffield offers local exemptions, applied for in advance, for buses, coaches and minibuses contracted with schools for educational trips, community transport vehicles with a Section 19 or 22 permit, and adapted vehicles with at least 10 seats that carry disabled passengers.
  • A non-compliant vehicle's daily charge can be paid up to six days before, on the day of, or up to six days after travel.
  • Sheffield station has a one-way access system via Fornham Street and Cross Turner Street; only hackney carriages may pick up immediately beside the station and general drop-off on Cross Turner Street is very short stay, so agree a coach meeting point away from the station approach.
  • Chatsworth: parking is free for pre-booked coaches and minibuses, and coach drivers get a refreshment voucher and use of a rest room.

Into the Peak District

Chatsworth is about 35 minutes out. Coaches and minibuses that are booked in park free, and the driver gets a rest room and a refreshment voucher, so book the group visit and give the vehicle details. Castleton, Bakewell and the Hope Valley are all within about 45 minutes. Peak lanes can be narrow, so tell the operator every planned stop and let them match the vehicle size.

Which airport

The three nearby airports, Manchester, East Midlands and Leeds Bradford, all sit roughly 45 miles out. Thanks to the M1, East Midlands is the quickest run, at about 50 minutes. Crossing the Pennines to Manchester takes nearer 1 h 15 min. Leeds Bradford takes about an hour and publishes no coach pick-up point, so agree the meeting spot with the operator before the flight lands.

Questions

Will our school trip pay the Clean Air Zone charge?

Not if the vehicle meets the standard. If it does not, a coach or minibus contracted with the school for an educational trip can still be exempted, but the application has to go in before the trip.

Where should the coach collect us after a match at Bramall Lane or Hillsborough?

Agree a spot a few streets from the ground with the operator rather than outside the gates, and expect slow traffic for a while after the final whistle.

Can we take a group to the snooker at the Crucible?

Yes. The World Snooker Championship is held at the Crucible each spring. Tudor Square is in the city centre, so check the vehicle against the Clean Air Zone and agree a set-down point close by.
