Oxford Coach Hire: Set-Down Bays and Parking
No coach can park in central Oxford. A coach sets the group down at one of three bays, leaves, and waits on the edge of the city. Plan the day around that and the rest is straightforward.
Choosing a bay
Pick the bay nearest the first visit. St Giles' and Beaumont Street suit the Ashmolean and the north side of the centre. St Aldate's South is the one for Christ Church. None of the three sits on a street in the Zero Emission Zone pilot.
At every bay the driver switches off and moves on once people are on or off, and enforcement officers patrol them. There is no slack for a party that turns up ten minutes late. Give the leader a firm time and a named bay.

Where the coach waits
Redbridge Park & Ride, south of the centre, is the main place to park a coach for the day. No booking is needed. Coaches use a separate entrance off Old Abingdon Road because the main one is height-restricted. Oxford Parkway, to the north, has a smaller area.
Redbridge is about ten minutes from the centre, so call the driver about a quarter of an hour before the group wants to board. That way the coach reaches the bay as the group does.

Coach rules in Oxford
- Heathrow (LHR) is about 45 miles from Oxford via the M40 and M25, about 1 h in light traffic; Birmingham Airport is about 65 miles (about 1.25 h).
- There is no coach parking in Oxford city centre, only bays to set down and pick up passengers. The three set-down points are St Giles' (northbound lay-by by the Taylorian, OX1 3NA), Beaumont Street (westbound, outside the Playhouse, OX1 2LW) and St Aldate's South (northbound, near the Crown Court, OX1 1TL).
- At set-down points drivers must switch off the engine and move on as soon as passengers have boarded or got off; the bays are patrolled by enforcement officers.
- Long-stay coach parking is at Redbridge Park & Ride (OX1 4XG, south, about 10 min from the centre; recommended, large, no pre-booking, coach entrance behind the Travelodge off Old Abingdon Road because the main entrance is height-restricted) and a small area at Oxford Parkway Park & Ride (OX2 8HA, north, no pre-booking).
- Oxford's Zero Emission Zone pilot (since 28 February 2022) charges every petrol and diesel vehicle, hybrids included, unless exempt, 07:00-19:00 every day, on New Road (Bonn Square to Castle Street), Bonn Square, Queen Street, Cornmarket Street, New Inn Hall Street, Shoe Lane, part of Market Street, Ship Street and St Michael's Street; registered local buses are exempt. None of the three coach set-down points is on a pilot street. A wider zone is still subject to assessment and consultation.
- Oxford traffic filters began a trial on 28 September 2026, replacing the temporary congestion charge used while Botley Road was closed (it reopened on 20 September 2026). The filters are on Hythe Bridge Street, Thames Street, St Cross Road and St Clement's Street (07:00-19:00 daily) and on Marston Ferry Road and Hollow Way (Monday to Saturday peaks). Coaches, buses, vans and lorries can pass without a permit; the published exemptions do not name minibuses, so check whether a minibus or car needs a permit on the planned route.
- Blenheim Palace: groups pre-book; commercial coach drivers get free admission, coach parking is free except on some special-event days, and guides and drivers check in at the Groups Welcome office to the left of Hensington Gate.
Filters, zones and smaller vehicles
Oxford's traffic filters began a trial in late September 2026. Coaches may drive through them with no permit. Minibuses are not mentioned among the exempt vehicles, so if the group is in a minibus or cars, check the route for a filter before the day. These rules are new and may change, so look at the council's current guidance close to the visit.
Blenheim, Silverstone and Heathrow
Blenheim Palace, about 25 minutes up the road, takes groups by pre-booking. Coaches park free except on some special-event days. On arrival, the driver reports to the Groups Welcome office beside Hensington Gate. Bicester Village is about half an hour, the Cotswolds around 40 minutes.
Silverstone is about 50 minutes. The circuit does not provide a drop-off and does not arrange group transport, so a Grand Prix trip needs its parking settled well before race weekend. Heathrow is about 45 miles, around an hour in light traffic via the M40 and M25.
Questions
Can the coach park in the centre while we tour the colleges?
No. The centre has set-down bays only. The coach parks at Redbridge Park & Ride and comes back to the bay at the agreed time.
Does a minibus need a traffic filter permit?
It may. The filters let coaches through, but the exempt list says nothing about minibuses. Look at where the filters sit on your route, or ask the operator to plan a way round them.
Can we hold a conference at a college?
Many colleges host residential conferences outside term time. Coaches still cannot park at the college, so plan transfers to a set-down bay.
