Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Newcastle Coach Hire with a Driver

Newcastle and Gateshead share a Clean Air Zone that takes in the city centre and four of the Tyne bridges. Cross the river in a coach below the standard and a daily charge is due.

The zone and the bridges

It is a Class C zone taking in most of central Newcastle and four river crossings: the Redheugh, High Level, Swing and Tyne bridges. Buses, coaches, minibuses and taxis have been charged since 30 January 2023. Private cars are not.

The coach standard is Euro VI; for a minibus it is Euro 6 if diesel, Euro 4 if petrol. The charge is per day and paid on GOV.UK. A compliant vehicle removes the question.

Fifteen minutes on Pilgrim Street

The city-centre coach bays are two spaces on Pilgrim Street. A coach may stay 15 minutes and may not come back to the same bay within an hour. Yellow lines are fine for setting down and picking up, never for waiting.

When the coach must stay longer, Ord Street has 13 coach spaces. Across the river, Gateshead's Oakwellgate coach park has 11, bookable in advance.

Coach rules in Newcastle

  • Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is about 10 miles by road north-west of the city centre, about 30 min in light traffic; the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal at North Shields is about 9 miles east, about 25 min.
  • The Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone (Class C) covers most of Newcastle city centre and the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges. Non-compliant buses, coaches, minibuses, taxis and HGVs have been charged since 30 January 2023 and vans since 17 July 2023; private cars are not charged.
  • In the Tyneside zone buses and coaches must meet Euro VI and minibuses Euro 6 (diesel) or Euro 4 (petrol); charges are per day and are paid on GOV.UK from 6 days before the journey until 23:59 on the sixth day after it.
  • Newcastle city-centre coach drop-off and pick-up is at two bays on Pilgrim Street: coaches may stay up to 15 minutes and may not return to the same bay within 1 hour. Coaches may also set down and pick up on yellow lines but may not wait there.
  • Longer-stay coach parking: Ord Street coach and lorry car park (NE4 7AD, 13 coach spaces) in Newcastle, and Gateshead Council's coach park on Oakwellgate (NE8 2AU, 11 spaces, bookable in advance; no cars).
  • The Tyne Tunnel uses free-flow tolling with number-plate cameras and no barriers: pay in advance or by midnight the day after travel.
  • Holy Island (Lindisfarne) is reached by a tidal causeway: Northumberland County Council publishes daily safe crossing times, which can change with weather, and advises allowing an extra 30 minutes.

Airport, port and tunnel

Newcastle International is about 10 miles north-west of Grey's Monument, around 30 minutes. A coach with 22 or more seats reaches the terminal front only when its access slot was reserved at least a full 24 hours earlier, and that booking is fixed once made. Heading east, the Port of Tyne passenger terminal at North Shields is about 9 miles and 25 minutes away.

The Tyne Tunnel has no barriers: the toll is paid beforehand, or by midnight on the following day.

Northumberland and Durham

Beamish is about 30 minutes and Durham about 35. Holy Island is a special case: the causeway is tidal. The council publishes safe crossing times each day and advises allowing an extra 30 minutes. Plan the whole day around the tide, not the other way round.

Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads is about an hour, Alnwick Castle about 45 minutes. Either leaves plenty of time on site within a normal driving day.

Questions

Does the zone affect a trip to the Gateshead side?

Yes, if you cross on one of the four bridges it covers. A coach that meets Euro VI pays nothing.

Can the coach wait on Pilgrim Street?

Only for 15 minutes. After that it moves to Ord Street or Oakwellgate and comes back for the pickup.

Can the coach just turn up at the airport?

No. Unless access was pre-booked with a full day's notice, number-plate cameras keep it off the terminal front road. For waiting, Callerton Parkway has a free Airport Waiting Zone, good for up to 90 minutes.

How should we plan a Holy Island visit?

Start from the published safe crossing times for your date, add the council's 30-minute margin, then fix the departure from Newcastle, about 1.25 hours away.
