Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Cardiff Coach Hire for Groups

Cardiff is an easy city for a coach most days. There is no charging zone and the Severn crossings are free. Stadium days are the exception, and they change the whole plan.

Stadium days

When the Principality Stadium hosts a big event, the streets around it close for most of the day, including St Mary Street, Westgate Street, Castle Street and High Street. The coach cannot reach the stadium door.

Event-day coach and minibus parking is laid on, for example on Lloyd George Avenue and at the Civic Centre, and can be booked ahead. Book early, and tell the group how far they will walk to the gate.

Parking on other days

Sophia Gardens, reached off Cathedral Road, has a council coach park that is long-stay seven days a week, with CCTV and toilets. It has only a few bays, and bookings are taken for event days only.

Coach rules in Cardiff

  • Cardiff Airport (CWL), at Rhoose, is about 12-13 miles by road south-west of the city centre, about 25 min in light traffic.
  • Wales changed the default speed limit on restricted roads (usually residential and built-up streets with street lights) from 30 mph to 20 mph in September 2023; after a review, highway authorities are returning some roads to 30 mph, so follow the signs.
  • Cardiff has no charging Clean Air Zone.
  • A council-managed off-street coach park at Sophia Gardens (off Cathedral Road) is long-stay seven days a week with 24-hour CCTV and toilets; it has a small number of coach bays, and booking is for event days only.
  • On major Principality Stadium event days the city-centre streets around the stadium (including Westgate Street, St Mary Street, Castle Street, Duke Street, High Street and Park Street) close for most of the day, and designated coach and minibus parking is set up at venues such as the Civic Centre and Lloyd George Avenue, bookable in advance.
  • Tolls on both Severn crossings between England and Wales were abolished on 17 December 2018.

Speed limits and the Severn

Wales made 20 mph the default on restricted roads, usually streets with street lights, in September 2023. Since a review, some of those roads have returned to 30 mph, so follow the signs. Town sections can take longer than older timings suggest.

Crossing into England costs nothing; tolls on both Severn bridges ended in December 2018. Bristol is about an hour and Bath about 1.25 hours.

The airport and the valleys

Cardiff Airport at Rhoose is 12 to 13 miles south-west of Cardiff Castle, about 25 minutes. A coach carrying 40 or more passengers needs the airport's authorisation before it arrives. Picking up on the approach roads is not allowed.

Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle are within 25 minutes. Big Pit at Blaenavon is about 50 minutes, Brecon about an hour. St Fagans National Museum of History, out on the city's western edge, needs most of a day on its own.

Conference groups should note that ICC Wales is at the Celtic Manor near Newport, not in Cardiff. Time those transfers on the M4, not across town.

Questions

Can the coach drop us at the stadium on match day?

Not at the door. The surrounding streets are closed, so book a space in the event coach parking and walk in.

Is there a Clean Air Zone in Cardiff?

No. Cardiff has no charging zone, so an older vehicle pays nothing extra to come into the centre.

Can we use Sophia Gardens coach park for a match there?

Bookings are taken for event days, but there are only a few bays. Book as soon as the date is fixed and have a fallback.

Do the 20 mph limits apply to coaches?

Yes, speed limits apply to every vehicle. Allow a little more time for journeys through towns and villages in Wales.
