Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Bristol Coach Hire with a Driver

Bristol has a central Clean Air Zone, a famous bridge that coaches cannot cross and a harbourside that is busy most weekends. Check the vehicle first, then the route, then the stops.

The Clean Air Zone

The zone is small and central and has operated since 28 November 2022. It is Class D, so it covers every kind of vehicle from private cars to coaches. Coaches need Euro VI. Diesel minibuses need Euro 6, which usually means about the end of 2015 or newer; petrol ones need Euro 4.

A vehicle below the standard pays a daily charge on GOV.UK. It is simpler to book one that meets it.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

A coach cannot cross. The bridge has a 4-ton gross weight limit and weighbridges that lock the barriers. Groups who want to see it are set down in Clifton, on Observatory Road, and go the rest of the way on foot. If your route needs to cross the gorge, the coach goes another way.

Coach rules in Bristol

  • Bristol Airport (BRS) is about 9 miles by road south-west of the city centre, about 20-25 min in light traffic and longer at peak times.
  • Bristol's Clean Air Zone, a small central Class D zone, started on 28 November 2022. Buses, coaches, minibuses, taxis, vans, HGVs and private cars that do not meet the standard pay a daily charge; buses and coaches must meet Euro VI, diesel minibuses and cars Euro 6 (about end of 2015 or newer) and petrol Euro 4.
  • Clean Air Zone charges are paid on GOV.UK, from 6 days before the journey until 23:59 on the sixth day after it.
  • The Clifton Suspension Bridge has a weight limit of 4 tons gross (2.5 tons per axle), with weighbridges that lock the barriers, so coaches cannot cross; coaches set down at Observatory Road in Clifton.
  • Coach set-down and pick-up points: Bond Street South, Colston Street, Guthrie Road / College Road (Clifton) and Observatory Road. Coach parking: Bristol Fruit Market, Canon's Road, Cumberland Road and Parry's Lane.
  • Tolls on both Severn crossings (M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M48 Severn Bridge) were abolished on 17 December 2018, so trips to Cardiff and South Wales cross free.

Stops and parking

The city names four set-down and pick-up points and four coach car parks. Pick the set-down nearest your first stop and the car park nearest your last, and give both to the operator in advance.

The Harbourside is the busy one. SS Great Britain, M Shed and the Aquarium all draw weekend crowds, so a fixed collection time matters more there than anywhere else in the city.

The airport and trips south and west

Bristol Airport is about 9 miles south-west of Temple Meads, 20 to 25 minutes. Anything over 16 seats goes to the Bus & Coach Park, booked online ahead, and may stay 30 minutes at most. Minibuses up to 16 seats use the Minibus/Over Height car park instead.

Bath is about 35 minutes. Cheddar Gorge and Wells are about 45. Stonehenge is about 1.25 hours. Cardiff is about an hour, and the Severn crossings carry no toll.

Questions

Can our coach drive over the Clifton Suspension Bridge?

No. A coach is far over the 4-ton limit, and the weighbridges would lock the barriers. It drops you on Observatory Road instead.

Do we pay a toll going to Cardiff?

No. Both Severn crossings have been free since 17 December 2018.

Is Bath in a Clean Air Zone as well?

Yes. Bath has its own charging zone across the historic centre, with the same coach and minibus standards. Check the vehicle against it before a combined Bristol and Bath day.

What if the coach overstays at the airport?

The Bus & Coach Park has a 30-minute limit, and overstaying brings a fixed parking charge. Share flight details early so the slot is booked for the right time.
