Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Aberdeen Coach Hire for City and Deeside Trips

Aberdeen's Low Emission Zone takes in the heart of the city centre, including Union Street, and applies to coaches and minibuses at all hours. Confirm the vehicle meets it before planning a pick-up in town.

Living with the LEZ

The zone is small, about 0.9 km², but it sits where many groups want to be. Cameras enforce it every day of the year, weekends and public holidays included. A coach needs Euro VI, a diesel minibus Euro 6 and a petrol minibus Euro 4.

Ask for the vehicle's standard on the quote. If only an older vehicle is free, set down and collect outside the boundary and let the group walk the last stretch. Carrying a Blue Badge holder exempts the vehicle.

Airport, P&J Live and the harbour

Aberdeen International Airport is at Dyce, about 6 miles from the Castlegate and 15 to 20 minutes by road when traffic is light. It publishes coach tariffs by length of stay yet names no coach pick-up spot, so agree where the driver meets the group before arrival.

P&J Live, at Bucksburn, is a short hop from the terminal, which helps conference delegates flying in. Overnight ferries to Orkney and Shetland sail from Jamieson's Quay in the city-centre harbour; most larger cruise ships now use South Harbour at Nigg Bay, a few miles south.

Coach rules in Aberdeen

  • Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ) is at Dyce, about 6 miles by road north-west of the Castlegate, about 15-20 min in light traffic; P&J Live is close to the airport.
  • Aberdeen's Low Emission Zone has been enforced since 1 June 2024. It covers about 0.9 km² of the city centre, running east to west along Union Street and north to south from Skene Street / Schoolhill to Willowbank Road / Virginia Street, and applies to all vehicles except motorcycles and mopeds, including buses, coaches and minibuses.
  • Scottish LEZs operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays, and are enforced by number-plate cameras. Diesel vehicles generally need Euro 6 (Euro VI for buses and coaches) and petrol vehicles Euro 4; vehicles carrying a Blue Badge holder, emergency vehicles and historic vehicles are exempt.
  • Overnight ferries to Orkney and Shetland leave from the passenger terminal at Jamieson's Quay in the city-centre harbour. Most larger cruise ships now berth at South Harbour in Nigg Bay (opened 2023), a few miles south of the centre.
  • Balmoral Castle grounds open daily only from April to the end of July, before the royal family's summer stay; plan Royal Deeside tours around those dates.

Royal Deeside and the castles

Balmoral's grounds are open only between April and the end of July. A Deeside tour later in the year can still take in Crathes Castle, about 30 minutes out, and the scenery on the way. Dunnottar, on the cliffs near Stonehaven, is also about half an hour.

Fyvie Castle is about 45 minutes. Speyside whisky country around Dufftown is about 1 h 15 min, which suits a full day with two or three stops.

On to Inverness

Inverness is about 105 miles, around 2 h 15 min without stops. As a one-way transfer that is simple. As a return day with sightseeing it gets long, so ask about the driver's hours and consider an overnight stop.
