Manchester Coach Hire for Groups
Manchester is one of the easier big cities for a coach. Nobody pays to drive in, and the council publishes exactly where coaches may stop and for how long. The limits are short, though, so timing still matters.
Nothing to pay on entry
Nowhere in Greater Manchester charges for clean air. The plan the government approved in January 2025 rules a charging zone out. Any coach or minibus can come into the centre without a daily charge, whatever its age.

Twenty minutes or four hours
The short-stay bays allow 20 minutes at most. Use them to load and unload, nothing more. Liverpool Road suits the Science and Industry Museum in Castlefield. Lower Mosley Street, Whitworth Street, Chorlton Street and John Dalton Street are the other choices.
For a coach that has to wait through a match, a show or a day of meetings, the medium-stay stands take up to 4 hours. Some are shared with buses and delivery vans. Two of them, Great Ducie Street and Cheetham Hill Road, can only be used overnight, from 19:00 to 07:00.
For a coach staying overnight, the long-stay option is at IWM North on The Quays. It must be pre-booked.

Coach rules in Manchester
- Manchester Airport (MAN) is about 9 miles by road south of the city centre, about 20 min in light traffic and longer at peak times.
- Greater Manchester has no charging Clean Air Zone: in January 2025 the government approved an investment-led Clean Air Plan that rules out a charging zone, so vehicles are not charged to drive in the city region.
- Short-stay coach drop-off bays (20 minutes maximum): Chorlton Street, Liverpool Road, Whitworth Street and Lower Mosley Street (two bays each) and John Dalton Street (one bay).
- Medium-stay coach stands (4 hours maximum): Byrom Street, Charles Street, Dutton Street, Store Street, Corporation Street and Great Bridgewater Street; Cheetham Hill Road and Great Ducie Street may be used only between 19:00 and 07:00. Some stands are shared with buses and delivery vehicles.
- Long-stay and overnight coach parking is available at IWM North (The Quays) by pre-booking only.
Match days and the airport
Old Trafford and the Etihad Campus draw very large crowds, and Co-op Live now sits on the same campus as the Etihad Stadium. On event days, pick a meeting point a short walk from the ground so the coach is not trapped in departing traffic.
Manchester Airport is about 9 miles south of Albert Square, around 20 minutes in light traffic. It now has two terminals, 2 and 3. Coaches at Terminal 2 use the yellow bus stops on Palma Avenue; at Terminal 3 they need a permit for the controlled lane. The airport publishes no coach waiting area.
Peaks, lakes and the coast
Castleton in the Peak District, Chester and Blackpool are each about an hour. Windermere is about 1.75 hours, which is a full day but a manageable one for a single driver if the group keeps to time.
Questions
Can the coach wait outside our hotel near Piccadilly?
Not on the street for long. It uses a short-stay bay for the loading, then moves to a medium-stay stand until the next pickup.
Will we pay a clean air charge in Manchester?
No. Under the current plan coaches and minibuses pay nothing to enter the city region.
Which airport should a Manchester group use?
Usually Manchester Airport, the closer of the two. Liverpool John Lennon also serves the area; compare the road time as well as the flight times before you choose.
