Edinburgh Coach Hire for Groups
Edinburgh is compact, busy and strict about coaches. The Low Emission Zone, the Old Town streets and short set-down limits all decide where the group gets off.
The castle is a walk from the coach
Large coaches cannot use Johnston Terrace. Castle groups get off on Castle Terrace. A coach may stay there free for up to half an hour. The free window opens at 08:30 on weekdays and Saturdays, at 12:30 on Sundays, and closes at 18:30 every day. From there it is uphill on foot, so allow time for slower walkers.
Anywhere else, a coach gets two minutes on a yellow line to let people off, and none at all where loading is banned. That is enough to unload a group that is ready, not to wait for one that is not.

Low Emission Zone
Penalties have applied since 1 June 2024 across a central area of 1.2 square miles. Coaches need Euro VI. The boundary roads are outside it, so a non-compliant vehicle can go round, but a compliant one keeps the route simple.

Coach rules in Edinburgh
- Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is about 8 miles by road west of the city centre, about 25 min in light traffic; Glasgow Airport (GLA) is about 45 miles, about 1 h.
- Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone (1.2 square miles) runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with penalty charges since 1 June 2024; buses and coaches must meet Euro VI, and diesel cars and vans Euro 6, petrol Euro 4. Motorcycles and mopeds are exempt.
- The LEZ boundary runs from Tollcross by Palmerston Place, Queen Street, Picardy Place and Abbeyhill to Holyrood Road, the Pleasance and the Meadows; the boundary roads themselves are not in the zone, so non-compliant vehicles may drive around it.
- Coach drop-off and pick-up on Castle Terrace is free for up to 30 minutes, 08:30-18:30 Monday to Saturday and 12:30-18:30 on Sunday; elsewhere coaches may set down on single or double yellow lines for up to two minutes only, and not where loading is banned.
- Council medium-stay coach parking (up to nine hours) is on Regent Road and Inverleith Place; coaches cannot use pay-and-display car bays. The council has no long-stay coach parking, and Park and Ride sites take coaches only by prior arrangement.
- Large coaches cannot reach Edinburgh Castle on Johnston Terrace; groups set down on Castle Terrace. The council is preparing a coach plan for routes, set-down points and parking, so check arrangements before each trip.
- Day trips to Glasgow enter a separate LEZ with the same standards; see the Glasgow page.
Where the coach waits
Regent Road and Inverleith Place offer medium-stay coach parking for as long as nine hours. The council runs no long-stay coach park. Park and Ride sites accept coaches only when arranged beforehand, and car pay-and-display bays are off limits.
A council coach plan covering routes, set-down and parking is being drawn up, so recheck the rules shortly before each trip.
Airport, August and day trips
Edinburgh Airport is about 8 miles west of Waverley Bridge, around 25 minutes. The airport sends coaches, and minibuses with 8 or more seats, to its coach park; the group walks over at the stand 10 crossing.
The 2027 Fringe fills most of August, 6th to 30th. Expect crowded streets and slow traffic in the centre, and set pickup points away from the Royal Mile. St Andrews is about 1.25 hours and Pitlochry about 1.5. For a half day, Rosslyn Chapel is about 25 minutes and the Forth Bridges at South Queensferry about 30.
Questions
Can the coach wait on Castle Terrace while we tour the castle?
Only for up to 30 minutes, within the set hours. For a longer visit it moves to medium-stay parking and comes back.
Can we pay to take an older coach into the LEZ?
No. Entry cannot be bought in Scotland; an older vehicle that goes in is fined. Book one that meets the standard or keep to the boundary roads.
Where can the coach park overnight?
Not with the council, which has no long-stay coach park. Settle overnight parking before the trip; a Park and Ride site is an option only if agreed in advance.
Is Glasgow a sensible day trip?
Yes. It is about 47 miles, around 1.25 hours. Glasgow enforces its own zone to identical standards, so one vehicle check covers both cities.
