Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Liverpool Coach Hire and Group Travel

Liverpool has no charging zone, but it has two river tunnels, two tolled bridges and a waterfront that fills on match days. Here the route matters as much as the stop.

Under the Mersey

Only one tunnel takes a full-size coach. Queensway, the Birkenhead tunnel, has a 3.5-tonne weight limit and a 3.9 m height limit. Coaches go through Kingsway to Wallasey instead. Tolls are taken at the barriers by cash, card or a prepaid T-FLOW account.

Heading towards Runcorn, the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges have no booths. Payment is due by 23:59 the day after the crossing. Coaches and larger minibuses sit in the higher toll classes.

Short stops in the centre

The council's coach map shows daytime 15-minute bays on William Brown Street and Crosshall Street. Beside the Royal Albert Dock, Gower Street has 10-minute bays at any hour. The map is not new, so the driver should read the street signs on the day.

For conferences and concerts on Kings Dock, coaches set down at drop-off areas beside the campus.

Coach rules in Liverpool

  • Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) is about 8-9 miles by road south-east of the city centre, about 25 min in light traffic; Manchester Airport (MAN) is about 35 miles, about 50 min.
  • Liverpool has no charging Clean Air Zone.
  • Mersey tunnels to the Wirral: the Queensway (Birkenhead) tunnel is limited to 3.9 m high, 2.7 m wide and 3.5 tonnes, so full-size coaches use the Kingsway (Wallasey) tunnel, limited to 5 m high, 2.9 m wide and 44 tonnes. Tolls are paid at the barriers by cash or card, or with a prepaid T-FLOW account.
  • The Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges (Runcorn-Widnes) use free-flow tolling with no booths; pay by 23:59 the day after crossing. Minibuses with more than 8 passenger seats are Class 3, and coaches Class 3 or 4 depending on weight.
  • Liverpool Experience Campus (Kings Dock) has coach drop-off areas adjacent to the site.
  • The city coach map shows short-stay pick-up and drop-off bays at Crosshall Street and William Brown Street (15 minutes, 08:00-18:00) and Gower Street by the Royal Albert Dock (10 minutes, 24 hours); check on-street signs before use.

Airports and match days

Liverpool John Lennon lies 8 to 9 miles out from Lime Street; allow about 25 minutes. Manchester Airport is about 35 miles, around 50 minutes. On airport runs using the M62, junction 6 has no eastbound exit until spring 2027; the diversion goes round via junction 7.

Anfield and the Hill Dickinson Stadium both draw very large crowds. On match days, agree a pickup point away from the ground and add time to every leg.

Over the border into Wales

Chester takes about 45 minutes. On the North Wales coast, Conwy and Llandudno are each about 1.25 hours, a comfortable day out for a coach group with a lunch stop in between.

Closer in, the Royal Albert Dock and Pier Head sit side by side. One set-down covers the Beatles Story, the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Liverpool and a Mersey Ferries river cruise, with the group walking between them.

Questions

Can a coach use the Birkenhead tunnel?

No. Queensway takes nothing over 3.5 tonnes. The coach uses Kingsway, the Wallasey tunnel, which allows up to 44 tonnes.

Is there a Clean Air Zone in Liverpool?

No. Liverpool has no charging zone, so the vehicle's emission standard adds no charge here.

What about Aintree in April?

The Grand National meeting at Aintree is held each April and makes those days busy on the roads north of the city. Book the vehicle early and ask the course where coaches set down.

Where does the coach drop us for the Beatles Story?

It is in the Royal Albert Dock. The closest bays on the coach map are on Gower Street, with a 10-minute stay.
