Coach and Minibus Hire in the United Kingdom

Gatwick coach transfers: the coach park rule and both terminals

Gatwick sends every group vehicle with more than eight seats to one place: the coach park, which sits on the ring road at South Terminal. The coach waits there, not at the kerb, and comes round only when the group is standing ready.

Everything starts at the coach park

All charter and group pick-ups in vehicles of more than eight seats must use the Gatwick coach park. That means a 16-seat minibus as well as a 53-seat coach. The permit, booked ahead or bought on arrival, gives up to three hours on site, enough for most late landings. Payment on site is by card only; ask whether your quote includes the permit.

One permit lets the driver collect from either terminal. That helps when half the group flies into North and half into South.

The coach moves when you are ready

A coach may not leave the coach park until its passengers are waiting on the forecourt and ready to board. So someone has to tell the driver when the last person is through. Agree who makes that call, and have the driver's contact before the flight lands.

Build in time for reclaim, the walk and a head count. A school party of fifty with suitcases takes longer to gather than anyone expects.

Where the driver meets you

  • All charter and group travel operators picking up passengers in vehicles of more than eight seats must use the Gatwick coach park and its facilities. A coach park permit allows the driver to collect the group from either the North or the South Terminal.

Where coaches wait

  • The coach park is on the South Terminal ring road. Operators pre-book a Coach Park Permit or buy one on arrival; it covers up to three hours in the coach park. Payment on site is by card only.

Drive to the city centre

  • about 30 miles by road to Trafalgar Square, about 70 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Dropping a group for departure

Set-down for departing groups happens on the lower forecourt, North or South. North Terminal's zone is squeezed between the hotel and the multi-storey. Gatwick charges for dropping off at the terminals, and a charter operator setting down there pays the standard charge, which has a maximum stay. Plan a quick unload: bags off, group in, coach away.

Gatwick to the West End

Trafalgar Square is about 30 miles by road, around 70 minutes in light traffic. At peak times it can be much more, so do not book a timed entry for the afternoon of arrival without slack.

Inside London, a full-size coach falls under the Low Emission Zone and needs Euro VI to avoid the daily charge. Minibuses up to 5 tonnes come under the ULEZ instead: Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol. Anything with 9 seats or more is discounted in full from the Congestion Charge.

Heading for Essex or East Anglia

Not every group goes into London. A coach going round the M25 to Essex crosses the Thames at Dartford. There are no toll booths: the charge applies 06:00 to 22:00 and is settled online before the end of the next day. The operator normally handles it, but confirm.

Questions

Can our minibus meet us at the terminal instead of the coach park?

Not if it has more than eight seats. Any charter or group vehicle of that size collecting passengers must use the coach park.

How long can the coach wait if the flight is late?

The coach park permit covers up to three hours. A longer delay needs a new plan with the operator, which is why the flight number belongs in the booking.

Is there a charge to drop a group at the terminal?

Yes. Charter operators setting down at the terminals pay the standard drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders are exempt once the vehicle is registered.
